Dual Enrollment classes, offered through Rappahannock Community College, give your student the ability to earn college credits at the same time as high school credits.  Earning college credits is not a requirement and has no effect on your grade in high school.  In order to earn the college credits your student needs to do the following:
  • Turn in a completed RCC Application to the counseling office or the RCC office in Room 215  (Needs parent signature).
  • Take an RCC placement test.  This test is available Monday through Thursday 4pm-8:30pm at the high school.  NO SIGN UP REQUIRED.  Just show up! (If you have taken an ACT or SAT, check with your counselor to see if it can be a substitute for the placement test).
  • Pay for the class they are enrolled in. The cost is $10 per credit beginning Fall 2017.  Most KGHS DE classes are 6 credits. The deadline for payment will be announced to DE students.
  • Pass the class with a "C" or higher.
If you think you have completed this process, please contact your counselor to check.  Make sure you have steps 1-3 completed to avoid missing out on the college credits. If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to contact your counselor.

RCC’s transfer classes are part of the Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree. Transfer classes such as ENG, HIS, PLS, BIO, SPA, and CHEM are designed to be acceptable at other colleges. CTE courses are not usually intended to transfer. There are exceptions and some in-state schools take CTE classes for transfer credit, but they are not advertised as transferable because that decision is made by the individual colleges.

Where and when can I take the VPT?

Students who have requested Dual Enrollment classes for the 2017-2018 school year will have the opportunity to take the required VPT test(s) at KGHS on April 4th and 5th 2017.  Students will need to sign up for a testing time in the school counseling office beforehand.  Before testing, students must complete a Rappahannock Community College Dual Enrollment Application (pink), which can be picked up in the school counseling office.   Students must have their RCC student ID number on test day.

What if I can’t take the VPT on those days?

Students who cannot (or do not) take their VPT test(s) on the above days will need to take their test(s) after school.  All testing will need to be done by no later than 3 p.m. on April 28th, 2017, otherwise students will be moved to a suitable replacement class* or will not earn the college credits.

*For the following classes: English 12 DE, DE Chemistry, and Nurse Aide

What if I don’t pass the VPT?

Students are allowed to attempt both the English and Math VPT tests two times in a calendar year.  If a student does not pass the test on both attempts they will be moved to a suitable replacement class* or will not earn the college credits.

How do Dual Enrollment credits work?  What about tuition?

Dual Enrollment students earn both high school and college credits.  Some high school credits are weighted and students must earn a grade of C or better to earn college credit.  See chart below for a breakdown of crediting and weighting policies.

Dual Enrollment classes at KGHS cost $10 per Rappahannock credit.  Tuition will be due on May 23rd, 2017 for English 12 DE, DE Chemistry, and Nurse Aide otherwise students will be moved to a suitable replacement class.  Payment for all other classes will be collected during the first two weeks of each semester or students will not earn the college credits. Checks and cash are accepted and to be turned in to Mrs. Fronzo in the Attendance Office.  Make checks payable to KGHS.
