Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps

posted Feb 11, 2020, 10:43 AM by Terri Morrison
The Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program is now accepting applications for crew member positions. YCC crews are comprised of 10 youth, ages 14-17 from diverse backgrounds, and three adult crew leaders. This team of young people will live in Virginia's state parks, for a three-week session, in a structured program of work and learning, closely supervised by professional park staff and committed volunteers. By day, the crews carry out priority park development and maintenance projects, and after hours they take part in planned environmental education, team-building, and recreational activities. Weekends consist of adventure training which can include, depending on park location, caving, canoeing, bouldering, nature hikes, etc.

The Virginia State Parks YCC program strives for two goals (1) to promote youth development, including opportunity youth, in a non-traditional setting and and (2) a raise environmental awareness in Virginia's youth and strengthen the stewardship of Virginia's valuable natural resources. In essence, YCC combines work experience, education and life skills development within the framework of environmental conservation and community service.

The YCC provides meals, housing and a program completion stipend of $500 for the participants. The youth must realize that although no prior experience is necessary, the program is outdoors, service-based, and it will be physically demanding. It is not summer camp.

Information brochure is available below.

Application and details available at http://vasp.fun/YCC. Two reference are required.

Application deadline: March 5, 2020
